Things are going along pretty well for someone who can only garden in 30 second chunks.
We haven’t had to buy salad greens for weeks. Violet has eaten all 3 strawberries that have ripened on our one tiny plant. The green beans are climbing and the purple beans are growing. The squash and cucumber are taking over the bed. The sun-loving plants (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant) are growing but not blooming yet. I’m afraid this is because I inadvertently put them in too much shade. When we built the bed there were no leaves on the nearby mulberry tree. Now that it’s almost summer the giant weed (bigger than last year) is casting a shadow on the garden half the day. I know in another month the sun will be higher and the bed will get more light. So should I wait, or replant the tomatoes and peppers in pots and put them in the sun? (With all my extra free time, ha!) So much to learn.
The sunflower house is also suffering a bit from the shade. Actually, the east side of the
“house” is getting more sun, so the plants are bigger. In fact, the vines on the west side haven’t come up at all. I’ve had to transplant the from extras we planted on the west. Still, even if we don’t get the full vine “roof”, it will kick ass.
Violet is becoming an herb garden expert, helping me clip sprigs for dinner just about every day. I just can’t leave her alone with the scissors. The thyme is still recovering from the buzz cut.
The star jasmine is blooming. The back porch smells so good it’s almost disgusting.
