the hero and the Shark mop

“Yer daddy’s a hee-ro!  A real hee-ro!  I hope ya’ll know that!” the slightly racist harpy neighbor down the street called to Violet and Graham after the police and animal control had left.  She was the one who had called 911.  I, myself, had only been helpful by doing laundry. The weather was so nice […]

Helium Taxi

Helium Taxi

I have a new favorite album.  And it is just coincidence that Rob made it.  It would be in constant rotation it even if I wasn’t married to the musician.  The title, “Helium Taxi“, is a line from the Weepies song “Happiness“.  I think that sums up the whole project.  Happy that he found amazing […]

R.I.P. Henrietta Universe, 4/2010 - 5/2012

R.I.P. Henrietta Universe, 4/2010 – 5/2012

She seemed fine after her egg binding incident, eating well, happily scratching with her girls.  But we never did get another egg.  So I wasn’t too surprised to find her pale and droopy on Wednesday night.  I put her in her coop and braced myself for a possible Chicken Spa the next day. But she never […]

brahma drama

Our white Brahma chicken, Henrietta Universe, has never been our most prolific layer.  So it took us a few days to realize she hadn’t given us an egg in far too long. I texted Rob, “Henrietta looks pale.  I don’t think she feels good.” “What?! How can a chicken look pale?” he replied. Good point. […]

Gratitude, Day 23: work

Gratitude, Day 23: work

These days I’m grateful more than ever that Rob has a good job.  Not just a good job, but a job he likes.  A career that has allowed me to stay home with the kids while they’re small. Skills!  Here he is, turning an ancient hand-me-down computer into a kid-computer.  Brilliant.  (One of the many […]

can't go back again... or can we?

can’t go back again… or can we?

Our anniversary was earlier this month.  It just so happened to be the wedding weekend of my best friend from college, in the same town we where Rob and I met and had our own wedding. So we left the kids and flew across the country.  This was our first trip alone since Violet was […]

Why is Graham jabbering at me from his crib instead of sleeping?

Why is Graham jabbering at me from his crib instead of sleeping?

Oh right. He’s a baby. And he’s concerned. Concerned that bony protrusions are slicing up his gums. Concerned that he hasn’t mastered crawling and the cat is just… out… of… reach. Concerned that I refuse to rock him for an hour and a half while he catches some Zs. This jabbering is keeping me from […]

it's permanent

it’s permanent

Well, the tattoos we got each other for our anniversary are permanent. I guess that means that our marriage is permanent. I mean, it would take lasers to remove these things. So that is what we are saying here, people. It would take lasers to break up this marriage. LASERS. Tattoo Story: The Why and […]

Anniversary

Anniversary

Five years. Wow. Together since 1995? Double wow. In that time we’ve lived the small-town-college-rock-band scene, traveled the country, lived abroad, backpacked through Asia and Mexico, learned to scuba dive, moved to Austin sight unseen, became home-owners and became parents twice over. I can’t wait to see what happens next. Yes, I’m very very lucky.

Okay, so some think it’s a bit suspect that we have a blonde little girl living in our house. But the boy… well, just look:
